In 2020 the Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA) celebrates 10 years, a decade of rewarding and celebrating Queensland regional arts and the wealth of creativity and imagination thriving in the regions.
The QRAA is an annual visual arts prize and exhibition for established and emerging artists living in regional and remote Queensland. The program aims to provide a platform for further professional development. The Queensland Regional Art Awards is open to all Queensland artists living outside of the Brisbane City Council area.
Theme: Decadence
Decadence may invite notions of luxury and self-indulgence. It may evoke ideas of wanton excess or wastefulness, perhaps with a casual or deliberate disregard of consequence. Dependent on circumstance, personal definitions of decadence can shift quite suddenly.
Artists are encouraged to explore the complex notion of decadence within their own communities and households across Queensland – both in times of shortage, and in times of plenty.
The theme is to be addressed in an accompanying artist statement of 100 – 150 words. All entries that meet competition requirements are eligible for the $10,000 Holding Redlich ‘Art for Life’ Award, People’s Choice Award, and for selection in the touring exhibition.

Young Artist Development Award***
$2,000 cash, non acquisitive, thanks to Turner Family Foundation
Textile Art Award
$1,500 cash, non acquisitive, thanks to an Art for Life donor
Remote Artist Award ^
$1,500 cash, non acquisitive, thanks to Woolloongabba Art Gallery
People’s Choice Award*
Adults: $1,250 cash, non acquisitive, thanks to TAFE Queensland
Youth***: $750, cash, non acquisitive, thanks to TAFE Queensland
Digital Art Award^^
Fully funded one week residency at State Library of Queensland, including 7 nights accommodation at Art Series – The Johnson, valued at $4,000, thanks to State Library of Queensland, Art Series – The Johnson and Flying Arts Alliance
Spotlight Award ^^^
A professional text to be written by visual arts essayist and consultant Louise Martin-Chew, PhD valued at $1,000, thanks to Onespace Gallery and art words
Artists must nominate their artwork for prize categories and meet the award criteria to be considered eligible for category prizes.
* All entries are eligible for the Holding Redlich ‘Art For Life’ Award and People’s Choice Award.
** For watercolour artists who have not previously won a major State or National art prize or award and do not have current gallery or agent representation.
*** For artists aged 16 – 25 years.
^ Open to artists who live in remote Queensland, more than 300km from an urban centre.
^^ Digital art means any artwork that has been created or enhanced by digital technology. Residency includes return airfare to Brisbane from your nearest airport or equivalent, accommodation and per diem. Must use within six months of receiving prize.
