Flying Arts announces new
Executive Officer
|
|
|
|
In November, the Board of Flying Arts announced
Mr. Paul Thompson's appointment as Executive Officer of the
organisation.
An experienced senior leader in the not-for-profit
arts sector, Paul succeeds Ms. Michelle Tuahine who stepped into the
role from her previous position on the Flying Arts Board while the
recruitment process was undertaken. The Flying Arts Board would like to
acknowledge and thank Michelle for her leadership and important
contributions during that interim phase.
|
|
|
The Flying Arts Board are delighted that Paul will
lead the organisation as Executive Officer into its next phase. He
brings a deep understanding of the arts industry, enthusiasm and
ability to take the organisation forward continuing to deliver arts
programs and services in regional Queensland, overcoming the impacts of
regional isolation and remote living and inspiring a creative life for
all.
Most recently, in the role of Operations Lead,
Paul has led and implemented innovative and effective business
processes and protocols and has a demonstrated history of fostering
excellent relationships with key stakeholders in the Queensland arts
sector and beyond.

Thanks to the many eager schools, creative
educators and community art groups By Request was kept very busy
throughout the year coordinating a stellar line-up of offerings.
Workshops and creative experiences were co-ordinated far and wide
across the state from Bundaberg to Townsville to Thursday Island and
many locations in between. Our network of facilitators throughout
the State delivered so many different 'by request' opportunities and
custom-made creative programs.
One of the highlights of 2022 was the Pathways
Project supported by the Queensland Government through Arts
Queensland.
The final stage of this project saw artist Cynthia
Copley visit Kepnock State High School in Bundaberg to develop a
workshop for year 11 art students in response to their year 12 art
curriculum for 2023. Students build a portfolio of work to base
their final assessment on broader self-led questions arising from an
investigation of Cynthia’s art practice. This one-day workshop
highlighted elements of Cynthia’s practice via the ways she observes
the landscape. Cynthia introduced painting techniques using gouache and
conte with students spending a wonderful time painting en plein air
then developing works further in the classroom studio.

Discovering digital media at art college in the
1980s, Far North Queensland artist Tim Ellis returned to this
experimental art form to develop his work The Sugar Ants’ Carnivale
for the 2022 Port Douglas Carnivale. From January to May
2022, Tim built models of the Port Douglas Sugar Wharf and placed them
inside an acrylic box which he then filmed with several ants running
over the models’ exteriors. This footage was shot against green screen
backings and Tim keyed on video layers representing the carnival party
atmospherics.
Working with Integrated Media, the final film was
projected onto the Port Douglas Sugar Wharf for 4 nights over the main
Port Douglas Carnival weekend. The iconic Sugar Wharf sits in the heart
of the Carnivale activities and can be seen from the parks and streets
of the town. Lighting it up with projection art drew many hundreds of
people to the shore to watch the spectacle.
“Adding video and projection art into my usual art
practice has allowed me to explore my subject matter in a time-based
medium,” said Tim. “I learned video techniques in the 1980s at art
school, however, these days the hardware and software to create
time-based works are readily available and affordable for a regional
artist.”
This case study meets the following RAF criteria
to a high degree: “Support quality and viability of artistic and
cultural activity.”
