Exhibition Development Program weekend highlights

Flying
Arts recently had a fabulous weekend running our annual Exhibition
Development Program. Facilitated by talented artist and arts
manager, Elysha Rei. This two-day weekend workshop delivered across the
18th -19th June, provided participants with a practical intensive,
where they learned how to master the art of developing an exhibition.
Midway
through the weekend, participants were invited to attend a curators
talk and networking event with Griffith University Art Museum,
exploring Jeff Gibson: Countertypes exhibition. This was a
fantastic opportunity for program participants to meet a community of
professional curators and writers. Read More

for the 2022 Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA)? Entries close 11:59

In
2022 artists are called upon to respond to the concept to ‘Reframe’ and
enter work that draws upon experiences and observations, reflecting
upon the past year or two and responding to the obstacles faced today.

Meet our 2022 QRAA Judges
|
We are excited to introduce the judges for this
year's Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA).
|
|
|
|
Aven Noah Jr. is not only a judge on our judging panel but
also the curator of the 2022 QRAA. Aven is from the Komet Tribe of Mer,
or Murray Island in Eastern islands of the Torres Strait and is the
curator for NorthSite Contemporary Arts, Bulmba-ja Arts Centre in
Cairns, Far North Queensland. He has over 14 years of experience in the
arts industry and approaches his work with a deep understanding,
respect and observance of cultural protocols. Aven was also formerly
Gallery Officer at Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island.

|
Rebecca McDuff is the Gallery Director for Bundaberg Regional
Galleries encompassing the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery and Childers
Arts Space. Rebecca is passionate about regional arts practice and has
a particular interest in curating exhibitions that exemplify the rich
cultural tapestry that influences artistic practice. Rebecca’s
background as a psychologist, also means that she has a keen interest
in the arts/ health intersect, and its potential for prevention, early
intervention, treatment and recovery.

|
Professor Elisabeth Findlay, Director of Queensland College of Art (QCA),
Griffith University is an art historian with a longstanding passion and
interest in Australian art and currently teaches courses at QCA on the
history of Australian Art. Her research focuses on issues surrounding
portraiture and the complexities of identity and she has published
widely on Australian colonial portraiture. Prior to her academic career
she worked as a freelance curator and writer, including working with
the National Portrait Gallery and Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.

|
Hamish Sawyer is a Brisbane-based independent curator and
writer with more than fifteen years’ experience in programming and
management across the commercial, government and not-for-profit
sectors. Hamish has served as Curator and Manager of
Caloundra Regional Gallery and previously worked at the Queensland Art
Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, as a co-curator for the 8th Asia
Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT8) as well as positions at
the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) and Arts Queensland, and several
commercial galleries.

art dealer since 2003, representing artists Vernon Ah Kee, Vivienne

Watson. His focus is on presenting and nurturing Australian artists. A
particular interest is the legacy of conceptual art, feminism,
environmentalism, contemporary indigenous practice and activist art.

a look through the lens of celebrated Brisbane artist Martin
Smith and explore the professional application of his
artistic practice in photography and photomedia. In his work, Martin
employs photography, typography and storytelling to consider how

providing teachers with ideas and scaffolding for delivering Unit 1,
Art as Lens.

We
are delighted to have Michelle Tuahine in the interim position as
Acting Executive Officer for Flying Arts. Michelle brings a wealth of
media experience and cultural governance and until recently, served as
a Director on the board of Flying Arts Alliance.
She
is also a member of the National NAIDOC Committee, and the Mental
Health Lived Experience Peak of Queensland. She is a Gangulu woman
whose traditional land covers Biloela, Banana, Moura, Thangool, and
Mount Morgan in Central Queensland.

RAF Quick Response Grants - July 2022 Round
|
Quick Response Grants are intended to assist regional artists, arts
organisations, and communities to take up professional or skills
development, or small project opportunities, and aim to support small
arts or cultural projects that cannot be funded by other means because
of their nature or timing.
The
June Quick Response Grant round is now open for applications and closes
11:59pm 31 July 2022. All applicants will be notified
of decisions by 8 August 2022.

Regional Arts Fund Project Grants
|
The
Project Grants stream supports applications
which benefit the community, increase access and participation, and/or
provide direct benefits to artists/arts workers. Project Grants provide
major funding for high-quality arts projects benefiting regional or
remote artists, arts workers, audiences, and communities.
Round 2 of the 2022 RAF Project Grants
Round
2 of the RAF Project Grants is now open for applications from 9am on 5
July 2022. The round closes at 11:59pm on 16 August 2022.

Award as a category of the Queensland Regional Art Awards

in homage to Flying Arts' founder Mervyn Moriarty and his penchant for
‘en plein air’ landscape painting. The exhibition features the 2021
winner, Cynthia Copley alongside the Award finalists and is open to the
public during the week.
