Colina Wymarra Bloodlines – Solo Exhibition 12-30 August |
As part of her prize in winning the QRAA 2023’s Remote Artist Art Award, Colina Wymarra held a solo exhibition at the Judith Wright Art Centre in September. It was a tremendous success, and we are delighted to report that Colina is now represented in Brisbane by Wentworth Galleries! Congratulations Colina! Colina notes about her exhibition and practice,
“I wanted to show the observer who I am and how richly intricate MY IDENTITY is as a Gudang/Yadhaykenu Woman from Cape York, as well as a Dauareb/Komet Woman from Mer Island in the Torres Strait. The stories of my people are not known in the mainstream – meaning the way I can tell it. These stories have been fragmented and somewhat “whitewashed” throughout time. Hence, the physical layout of this exhibition, from canvases to ceramics I hope, will take you through a journey of the celebrated identity of my people and…ME.”

At the Atrium from the 9th to 23rd of September, Colina Wymarra both showcased her works in her solo exhibition “Seasonal Bloodlines” and had an artist talk with Director of the UQ Art Museum, Peta Rake. In her artist showcase Seasonal Bloodlines, Colina shared stories of lore handed down to her by her ancestors of Gudang/Yadhaykenu of Cape York as well as the Dauareb/Komet People of the Torres Strait. Colina describes her solo exhibition as, “A continuation of the Bloodlines but from a different perspective. A “Seasonal” perspective. What you may see when you visit my Country is not what I see. For example, you may come to my Country, Cape York, and see pristine beaches, and yet I see Dugong Hunting Season by the seaweed on the beach and a smell – a different smell emanating from the water.” The event was hosted by Flying Arts Alliance Inc. and presented by award sponsor, The University of Queensland. |

Cultural Day - Blackbutt State School
We recently sent 4 amazing first nations artists to a cluster of school students living in the South Burnett region. Erica Eurell, David Eurell, Paul Bong and Elizabeth Bong each provided their own unique workshop that students rotated to all day.
The students were able to showcase First Nations Culture and teach students about understanding their stories. We painted, learnt about Totems, sang and made music and created stone paintings. We had a wonderful time at Blackbutt with these 200 students. We’re beyond thrilled to bring Indigenous art into schools and communities across Queensland. These artists have been an amazing addition to our By Request team, and we’re so grateful for their creativity and knowledge. |
