In this webinar Far North Queensland artist Lynette Griffiths explores the use of art to connect with the environment and issues related to climate and sustainability.
The Australian Curriculum places emphasis on Sustainability as a priority for study that connects and relates relevant aspects of content across learning areas and subjects.
“The Arts provides engaging and thought-provoking contexts in which to explore the nature of art making and responding. It enables the exploration of the role of The Arts in maintaining and transforming cultural practices, social systems and the relationships of people to their environment. Through making and responding in The Arts, students consider issues of sustainability in relation to resource use and traditions in each of The Arts subjects. The Arts provides opportunities for students to express and develop world views, and to appreciate the need for collaboration within and between communities to implement more sustainable patterns of living. In this learning area, students use the exploratory and creative platform of The Arts to advocate effective action for sustainability.” Australian Curriculum

Event Details
In this webinar Bianca Tainsh explores the interaction between art and social change. She provides examples and case studies of activists works and projects and the effect of these on the community. She discusses how to promote engagement and collaboration between artists and community groups and schools, how to represent diversity, create a safe space to invite people into, and how to generate positive social change. This workshop connects to the Australian Cross-curricular Priority of Sustainability and will assist educators in imagining artistic projects to engage students and the school community.
Additional Information
Presenter
Bianca Tanish
Utilising a variety of media and contemporary methods, Australian artist Bianca Tainsh creates experiential spaces. Archives of cyber-sourced material and semiotic rhetoric become the provenance for video, digital media, assemblages and live art, all merging to inspire reflection on contemporary dilemmas. Through theoretical frameworks and narrative, audiences are invited to engage deeply with issues such as climate change, mass consumerism, and the search for autonomy and spirituality in the digital age. And, as a way of escaping social expectations and consumerist shaping a reconnection with nature and humanity is often facilitated through ritual and visualisation. By generating these intimate moments of connection with the audience, Bianca’s projects endeavour to reverberate outside of the gallery and realise actual social transformation.
Bianca has exhibited work in both solo and group shows, and live art performances. She has participated in international residency programs and has been the recipient of an ArtStart grant. Her artistic education includes a 1st Class Honours Degree from RMIT University, and to compliment the social aspects of her practice she also studied Arts & Community Engagement at the Victorian College of the Arts.

The Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA) celebrates 10 years in 2020, a decade of rewarding and celebrating Queensland regional arts and the wealth of creativity and imagination thriving in the regions.
Decadence may invite notions of luxury and self-indulgence. It may evoke ideas of wanton excess or wastefulness, perhaps with a casual or deliberate disregard of consequence. Dependent on circumstance, personal definitions of decadence can shift quite suddenly. In 2020, artists were encouraged to explore the complex notion of decadence within their own communities and households across Queensland – both in times of shortage, and in times of plenty. This is the exhibition outcome of the Queensland Regional Art Awards 2020.

Event Details
This workshop connects with the Queensland Senior Visual Arts Curriculum Unit: Art as Knowledge. Educators will gain first hand experience in creating work to respond to a stimulus – forms or domestic objects, a knowledge of different casting environments and materials, and experimentation through an artistic process.
In this workshop Simone Eisler will provide an overview of her practice and the vast array of materials she uses for her work. She will explain the forms created and how they began as plaster bandage casts are then joined together to create new forms. Using objects you bring as well as a selection of unusual forms we’ll bring, you will go through the process of making forms in this way and explore to the endless possibilities of this medium and technique.
For schools, plaster bandage is a readily available low-cost material that has a variety of uses across sculpture and art making. It’s quick drying and able to be formed over a variety of objects to create casts or moulds of part of the original form. In addition, several casts or moulds can be joined together to create brand new forms. Once left to dry overnight, the resulting forms can be embellished with other materials.
Plaster bandage casting can take place anywhere, from the classroom table setting to a workshop space and even in the bush. All that’s needed is al-foil to cover the form you are covering the plaster bandage with, some tape, bowls, access to water and of course lots of plaster bandage cut into strips.
At the end of the workshop you’ll walk away with:
- An understanding of how to cast a form from a domestic or found object
- A knowledge of different environments you can cast objects from
- Techniques on how to create new forms by joining pieces with screws and bolts
- Ideas of how to further embellish the form at a later stage once it’s totally dry
Participants to Bring:
- Objects to use as stimulus that you can make simple moulds of. We are making a cast of ‘half’ of the object. Basically all kinds of objects are suitable if they have a surface area from which a layer of plaster bandage can be laid onto – and lifted off. (e.g. covering the underside of a salad bowl and lifting it straight off once dry). Not too many undercuts or the ‘cast’ will get stuck. However sometimes just part of an object that has undercuts can be covered and that’s fine.
- Suitable items include domestic plates and other household items including bowls, organic forms such as gourds or large shells, doll faces, jelly moulds etc.
- Old magazines/paper for collage into the forms, feathers, drawing media to use on plaster forms – charcoal, pen, ink, paint, lace or fabric /bibs and bobs you might want to glue into your form
- Sketchbook / notebook
- An apron – it gets messy!
- Thin rubber gloves if you have concerns about plaster and your skin
- A dust mask if you have concerns about plaster dust
- Lunch or snacks – there are several food establishments within walking distance of the venue if preferred. (tea, coffee and biscuits for morning and afternoon tea will be provided)
- Participants must wear enclosed shoes

Facilitator
Simone Eisler
Simone Eisler’s cross-disciplinary practice explores the relationship between the human body and nature, particularly the concepts of physical transformation, species evolution and biodiversity. She pushes this scientific investigation further into the realm of both mythology and futurist thinking, with a focus on interrogating presentation methodologies.
Eisler’s practice consists of installation, photography or sculpture. Within each of these areas she introduces materials from the animal world. In particular, her imaginary sculptural forms rework the materials in different ways either by re-skinning, casting or fracturing and reconfiguring elements. During the last three years she has been working extensively with plaster bandage as a means of casting forms, which she later embellishes with a variety of materials.
She runs numerous workshops for educators, artists and schools with a focus on mixed media, environmental art and sculptural form.

Parenting or guardianship as an
Event Details
Parenting or guardianship as an artist can be an isolating experience. It places limitations on our opportunities to get together with fellow artists to share ideas and to collaborate. In this webinar, Linda Clark will discuss how the networking community developed through her research (the Mother-Artist Model) could help overcome the challenges of isolation through collective dialogue. Explore how to embrace parenthood or guardianship while developing a sustainable approach to your art practice.
Additional Information
Linda Clark’s practice explores the complex interrelationship between the roles of mother and artist as a potential strategy to address the issue of maternal periphery. This is defined as the physical or psychological feeling of being outside arts discourse as experienced by regional women artists. The nature of Clark’s Doctoral research interrogates her role as a mother and a contemporary artist as an inseparable challenge. Both of these experiences are conceptually and theoretically informed by her personal experiences and practice.
Clark’s research utilises an interdisciplinary approach that is initiated through her practice, incorporating multifaceted interactions of artmaking in hybrid forms including conceptual art, video, installation and sculpture. In conjunction with these art forms, her work is also informed by interpersonal and collaborative relationships, alongside research which explores areas such as identity, maternity and feminism.
Through her practice, Clark has devised a ‘Mother-Artist Model’ (MAM) as a conceptual framework for practice and a form of intentional documentation. The model is embedded within the artist’s need to explore through making, thinking, researching and interacting with her children through the intertwined roles of the mother-artist. In this exploration, she is not merely engaged with the subject matter of motherhood, rather her practice is located in everyday ritual and complex exchanges between herself and her children. The artist employs these interactions as a method through the MAM in her role as “facilitator, constructor and keeper of memory”. MAM has been applied to other mother-artists and holds broader resonance across regional communities.

Additional Information
Presenter
Michelle Tuahine is a Gangulu/Ngāti Kahungunu woman with a background in journalism. She is a descendant of the Gangulu people of Central Queensland, and a member of the Brisbane Murri community.
Born in Brisbane, Michelle became interested in a career in the industry after seeing the portrayal of her community in the media in the lead up to the 1982 Commonwealth Games. The then Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen had banned street protests by declaring Queensland a ‘State of Emergency’. It became the catalyst for a career in news and current affairs reporting, becoming a cadet journalist with ABC TV News and Current Affairs in 1990, and later working with the ABC’s Indigenous Programs Unit on its award-winning series ‘Blackout’. Michelle has also worked with National Indigenous Television (NITV) and National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS News).
Michelle is currently assisting her family in their aspirations for native title, as well as helping plan, manage and protect cultural heritage on country.
In 2012, Michelle was appointed to the Indigenous Advisory Group (IAG) for Brisbane Festival – Queensland’s largest cultural event. Michelle helped develop the Festival’s ‘Statement of Intent’ with a vision for healing and meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities. In 2018, Michelle continued sharing her knowledge and experience with Brisbane Festival staff, as well as taking part in Acknowledgement of Country ceremonies with the Festival’s visiting international artists.
