Winter Plinth Exhibition – Meet the Artist: Nicola Hooper

Logan-based illustrative artist Nicola Hooper finds that working on a small scale can be as challenging as working on a large scale.  “I create a lot of my work large, so it’s refreshing to work small,” she said, “I feel there is an intimacy to it which is difficult to replicate when working larger.”

Nicola felt flattered to be included as part of the Flying Arts Featured Artists at the Judy program. “I know several of the artists featured in the Autumn exhibition and I’m a great admirer of their work.” she said. The timing of this show was also perfect, as her solo show at Tweed Regional Gallery had just finished and she saw this as a wonderful opportunity to promote her artwork.

The second half of 2018 is shaping up to be busy for Nicola, who is a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize 2018 at the South Australian Museum, Adelaide, where her work will be on display from 8 June – 5 August. She is also working towards her ‘Zoonoses’ solo exhibition at Logan Art Gallery opening on the 19 October – 24 November, and will have work in the Animals and Plants printmaking exhibition at Firestation Press 18 July – 11 August in Melbourne. Nicola will also be facilitating a children’s wallpaper project and an adults’ lithography workshop at Logan Art Gallery to accompany her exhibition later in the year. In addition, Nicola is currently working towards the conclusion of her Doctorate through Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. She has also been invited to create work for the Moreton Bay Council‘s 15 Artists 2018 Exhibition at Redland Art Gallery from 25 August -13 October, as well as creating a large lithographic sculpture commission.

As the winner of the 2015 QLD Regional Art Awards Annie Tan Memorial Watercolour Award and touring artist in the 2014 QLD Regional Art Awards, and member of Flying Arts for many years, Nicola is a valued member of the Flying Arts community.

Nicola’s citronella artist books will be on display at the Judith Wright Centre until 27 August 2018 as part of  Flying Arts Featured Artists – Winter Exhibition
