Ian McCallum is an artist and sign writer, interested in offering creative opportunities outside of metropolitan areas. Heavily influenced by graffiti and street culture during his own youth, McCallum has developed avenues for young people to experience the same.
Ian will be presenting a workshop for young artists on legal graff art at the upcoming Young Artist Development program, ArtizPUBLIC@Toowoomba. We sat down with him to ask him about his art.
How did you get into your art form?
Through painting graffiti. Then through my apprenticeship I was introduced to the traditional art of sign writing.
What inspires you to create?
Old signs, graffiti and typographical design.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists?

What was your first big break as an artist?
I don’t think I have had it yet. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to work alongside some pretty amazing artists through two projects, Animating Spaces and Bundaberg’s Crush Festival. That was pretty 
inspiring to continue painting.
Who has been your greatest influence/mentor?
My business partner Grace is super influential in my life. I also am really inspired by Matthew Haynes from Analogue Digital.
As a practicing artist what are 3 things you can’t live without?
Tea, music and sleep.
What are some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome to get where you are as a professional artist?
Finding a style that I can make my own.
What plans have you got coming up next?
To get my work shown in more galleries and projects around Australia and overseas.
