Event Details
A workshop for young artists aged 12 to 18, to develop their skills and learn new creative techniques alongside award-winning artist, contemporary watercolourist, Libby Derham.
Participants will begin by exploring the practice and processes of award-winning and fourth-generation watercolour artist Libby Derham. Participants will gain an insight into watercolour, information about its fundamental materials, and its application.
Through a series of demonstrations and hands-on examples, participants build up a personal visual reference card of core watercolour skills. Washes such as ‘wet-in-wet’ and ‘wet on dry’ are explored along with changes to brush grip to create different mark-marking effects. The culmination of the session is bringing together several of these skills to create an abstracted landscape based on their local environment. Participants will leave the session having gained a ‘toolbox’ of watercolour starters to set them off with this wondrous medium.
Optional: you are invited to bring a photo of your favourite landscape to work from.
Works of art created by young workshop participants will feature in an exhibition at The Court House.
These sessions are being held as part of the Cairns opening weekend of Paint the Town, the 2021 touring exhibition of the 2021 Queensland Regional Art Awards.

Additional Information
Watercolour runs in Libby’s veins, going back four generations in her family. She has a strong appreciation of the beauty in natural landscapes and works Plein Air weekly. “I work intuitively, focusing on the authenticity of marks, I seek to capture the essence and sensory experience of place along with translating birdsong into line.” Libby creates ‘drawing whilst walking’ scrolls to map landscapes and enjoys pushing the boundaries of watercolour working on unconventional surfaces. Originally from England, Libby studied Art in the UK before emigrating. She has been a finalist in the Queensland Regional Art Awards, Du Rietz and Local Artist Local Content 20/21 awards.
