Have an idea for an exhibition, but don’t know where to start? In this weekend intensive program, master the art of developing an exhibition and learn how to pitch your proposal to art galleries.
Join curator, consultant and multisensory artist, Cara-Ann Simpson for this program that will help you design, plan and manage your solo or group exhibition. As part of this intensive program participants will learn:
- The essential principles of exhibition concept development, planning and design.
- An introduction to curatorial principles, with a focus on ‘storytelling’ through artwork.
- Tips and advice for working with exhibition venues to ensure the production of your exhibition is seamless.
In addition, participants will also receive:
- An ‘Exhibition Development Handbook’ developed by Cara-Ann prior to the workshop, which includes further resources on:
- Marketing and promotion
- Contracts and legalities
- Artwork packing, handling and installation
- The chance to gain feedback from Cara-Ann on completed proposals following the intensive weekend.
- The opportunity to ‘pitch’ your resolved exhibition proposal to the Queensland College of Art Galleries 2024 exhibition schedule.
- An exclusive invitation to an arts industry networking event, hosted by Griffith University Art Museum.

What to bring
- A laptop for working on your exhibition proposal
- Pens and highlighters/coloured pencils
- Images of recent artworks and your artist/arts worker CV
- Lunch and/or snacks.
You will have the option to provide your recent artworks and CV to Flying Arts and Cara-Ann Simpson in advance in advance of your session.
Additional Information
This intensive will be held at the Griffith University Queensland College of Art, South Bank. The campus is a 10-minute walk from the Brisbane CBD and is adjacent to the Queensland Art Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art, the State Library, the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Additional Information
Your facilitator: Cara-Ann Simpson is an artist, curator, cultural heritage expert, educator, and consultant. Her background encompasses the arts, culture, heritage, tourism, festival and land management sectors. Simpson specialises in professional development and curatorial education for artists and arts workers. She has a broad depth of knowledge as both an artist and arts worker. This provides insight into, and understanding of, both sides of the sector. As a multidisciplinary artist, Simpson engages with sensory perception and participation. She has exhibited broadly in Australia and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions. Simpson has curated exhibitions, tours, festivals, regional initiatives and publications for councils and non-profits.
