Explore the concept of Material Thinking and the Poetics of Process and how artists use visual language to express complex ideas and communicate meaning across cultures, time and geography. Brisbane-based artist Glen Skien discusses how visual language, symbol systems and art conventions can express ideas and feelings in images, objects and experiences.
Examine art practices and how to read and interpret artworks of Australian and international artists who innovatively exploit cross-cultural meaning and communication through visual language. You will:
– Understand how poetics informs conceptual development.
– Learn classroom strategies for initiating concepts of Material Thinking.
– Develop reflective writing strategies to assist students in concept development.

Dr. Glen Skien (DVA, MVA) is a Brisbane based artist and arts educator whose studio practice embraces a mix of contemporary printmaking, collage and artists’ books. Having completed both his Masters and Doctor of Visual Arts he currently tutors at the Brisbane Institute of Art and presents printmaking workshops to high schools in Brisbane, regional Queensland and wider Australia. As a visual arts educator his teaching focuses on the integration of poetic based methodologies.
