The staff and students were very welcoming of me and Flying Arts.

The students were introduced to the concept of random weave as a technique and the types of materials that can be used to create sculptural vessels and forms. We discussed preparation of a variety of materials (including plant fibres) and the students were given a demonstration beginning with the use of a mold as the structural support. Recycled packing tape was the weaving medium.

Some students had brought their own materials to incorporate and we discussed how they could be used. We also talked about other basketmakers and their techniques and conceptual ideas.

Students worked hard and focused on creating their designs around their chosen mold, random weaving until their ‘sculpture’ was able to be removed and ‘freeform’ woven. Towards the end, students were able to weave other chosen softer materials in to personalise their ‘baskets’.

This workshop was not only about developing creativity and new skills. The girls found also a need for tenacity and perseverance to achieve their wonderful results.
