What is the Recovery Boost?

The Regional Arts Fund Recovery Boost is a $10 million targeted measure announced by the Australian Government in 2020 as part of the Relief and Recovery Fund. It responds to the difficulties experienced by regional artists, arts organisations and communities who have been heavily impacted by COVID-19. The Recovery Boost is one-off funding and will be delivered through the Regional Arts Fund and seeks to offer short (Relief), medium (Recovery) and long-term (Renewal) support.

RAF Relief – up to $5,000

Relief grants are designed to assist regional artists, arts organisations and communities to meet their immediate needs. This could include asset replacement or purchase, support for arts practice (including self-directed residency/research and development), small projects and professional development opportunities.

This is a rolling fund and applications will be assessed and funding allocated in the order they are received. Rounds will close when the fund allocation has been exhausted.

All RAF Relief projects must be completed by 30 June 2021.

For projects commencing on or after: a minimum of 4 weeks after application date
Amount: Up to $5,000
Opens: 9:00 am 1 July 2020
Closes: 5:00 pm 31 August or when funds expended.

RAF Relief Round 3 - Extension Added

RAF Relief Round 3 Extension

Due to overwhelming demand for quick-response funding for artists and artsworkers during the coronavirus pandemic, Flying Arts Alliance has announced an extension to Round 3 of the Regional Arts Fund (RAF) Recovery Boost – RELIEF grant, open from 9 am on 1 October 2020 and closing at 4 pm on the same day.

Funds originally allocated for Quick Response grants in 2021 have been brought forward to meet immediate needs. Read the full announcement.

Please note: Applications for RAF Relief Round 3 Extension will be assessed, and funding allocated to successful applicants in the order in which applications are received, until available funds are exhausted. Acknowledgement of this process is a condition of submitting a funding application.


For projects commencing on or after: 13 October 2020
Amount: Up to $5,000
Opens: 9:00 am 1 October 2020
Closes: 4:00 pm 1 October 2020

RAF Recovery – up to $30,000

Recovery grants are designed to meet the medium-term recovery needs of artists, organisations and communities. Projects in this program should focus on activities that assist in recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

Project activities could include creative recovery projects, training programs, operational recovery plans, asset purchase or replacement (up to $5000) and the development of risk plans and emergency operating procedures and responses.

RAF Recovery

The RAF Recovery Program will operate as a competitive funding round.

For projects commencing on or after: 1 January 2021
Amount: Up to $30,000
Opens: 9:00 am 31 August 2020 
Closes: 5:00 pm 12 October 2020 

All RAF Recovery projects must be complete by 30 June 2024.

RAF Renewal – up to $150,000 over 3 years

Renewal grants will provide up to three years of funding to support projects that have strong partnerships and demonstrated long term outcomes, with sustainable future-positioning focus.

RAF Renewal

For projects commencing on or after: 1 July 2021
Amount: Up to $150,000 over three years

Proposals Open: 18 September 2020
Proposals Close: 23 November 2020
Shortlisted EOI submissions close: 29 January 2021

These projects will be strategic in nature. Collaborations across State and Territory borders will be encouraged. The projects can be process-driven and provide an opportunity to think beyond ‘snap back’ and to consider renewed arts practice and learning processes.

Project activities could include partnership projects, community events or programs, First Nations-led renewal and wages for workers (First Nations worker positions will be encouraged). 

All RAF Renewal projects must be complete by 30 June 2024.


How to Apply

Interested parties are invited to submit a draft RAF Renewal Proposal via SmartyGrants.

Proposals are now closed.

Proposals will need to include:

  • Identification of possible project partners and target audience
  • An outline of your proposed plan
  • Program outcomes including community engagement and renewed arts practice
  • Topline indicative budget

Short-listed applicants will be invited to make a full application, to be evaluated by an independent panel of assessors in early 2021, with projects commencing by 1 July 2021.

This new funding is designed to support Creative Confidence and build Community Confidence

All Recovery Boost funded activities should aim to meet the objectives of the RAF:

  • To encourage and support sustainable economic, social and cultural development in regional communities;
  • To develop partnerships and networks which leverage support for projects and encourage ongoing collaboration;
  • To develop audiences and broaden community engagement with the arts; and
  • To increase employment, professional development opportunities and profile of regional and remote artists.
