By Request Frequently Asked Questions

You are here: Home / By Request Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below a number of frequently asked questions regarding our By Request workshops. Still have some questions? Please email our By Request Program Lead at byrequest@flyingarts.org.au.

How much do materials cost?

Material costs are not included in our quote as they differ depending on the nature of your workshop. Material costs are additional. Materials are arranged directly with the workshop facilitator. They will provide tools and equipment for workshops and any consumables will be provided at your expense. You may purchase your own materials or use any you may already have on hand.

How can I keep costs down?

We keep the costs of our workshops as affordable for the regions as possible and aim to provide you with the best possible service at the best possible price. Some things to consider to get the best value for money on our incursions:

  • Choose a workshop that has low material costs i.e. drawing or weaving instead of mosaic or moulding and casting.
  • If you are looking at a number of workshops, consider grouping artist visits into one block so that travel is reduced.
  • Speak with your community to see if costs could be shared via community engagement from other individuals or organisations.
  • Speak with Flying Arts directly about your plans.
Where can I find funding for your workshops?

For funding opportunities relevant to your area you could look at Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) or Arts Queensland websites. For further information on arts funding options, head to the grants and funding section of our website.

We can provide a non-obligation quote for your project should you wish to apply for funding. We can also provide supporting documents for your funding application including letters of confirmation for the engagement, artist CV’s and availability etc.

Please note that you cannot apply for the Regional Arts Fund if you are engaging the services of Flying Arts for your project, including our By Request workshops.

Am I obliged to accept a quote if I have asked for one?

Not at all. We are happy to provide you with a quote, with no obligation to accept it. Please note that quotes are only valid for one month from issue.

How do I choose what workshop I want?

Our workshops are delivered on a tailor-made basis, rather than off-the-shelf style. Your workshop or project can be designed to meet certain objectives or outcomes, e.g. anything from fulfilling specific curriculum requirements to developing a greater sense of community through place-making. Let us know what you want to achieve during the workshop or project, and we will pair you with a Touring Team member who matches your needs.

If you are unsure, browse our workshop areas for inspiration, or call our By Request Lead to discuss your ideas.

How can I see what kind of workshops have been delivered in the past?

Head to our Flying Arts news section of the website to see blog posts and travel journals of previous workshops we have run. Here are three to get you started.

Arts Business – Emily Devers at Gab Titui Cultural Centre, Thursday Island

Silversmithing – Clare Poppi at Gladstone Regional Council’s SUNFest, Gladstone

Tie Dye – Renata Fojtikova at Roma

Do I get to choose the artist/facilitator?

On our Touring Team, we have 60 experienced, multi-skilled arts professionals. As such, we will choose the best facilitator available at the designated time to fill your request. If you have specific requirements in mind, please do let us know.

How many workshops can I book?

Our online enquiry form allows you to input up to six (6) workshops, with no limitation on time or dates. If you require more than this please contact the By Request Lead for assistance.

Is there a minimum number of participants required?

No. Our facilitators can work with one participant as a mentorship, a small or large group or school class. If the group is a school class, the teacher is required to be present.

How far in advance to I need to book workshops?

We ask for six (6) week’s notice on all booking enquiries. You are  welcome to submit an enquiry with less than six (6) week’s notice; we will try our best to fill your request however we cannot guarantee we can it in this shorter time frame.

Can I combine multiple technique or skill development areas in one enquiry?

Of course! We can engage different facilitators for different elements of your booking, or provide one multi-skilled artist/facilitator.

What is the role of Flying Arts during my engagement?

Flying Arts supports the administration and logistics of the workshop, as well as liaising between the artist and organiser.  Flying Arts supports all stages of your workshop booking process, and is available via phone and email to assist you with any questions or concerns that may arise.
