In this webinar Flying Arts’ Regional Arts Fund Lead, Nathaniel Andrew, will discuss the national cultural funding landscape of 2022, answering your Frequently Asked Questions about the RAF Community Project Grant and Quick Response Grant schemes.
Nathaniel will speak to the context of the fund, what RAF aims to support and strategies for navigating competitive arts funding in 2022. We encourage you to questions prior to the webinar, to be answered during the presentation.

About your facilitator: Nathaniel Andrews belongs to the Yorta Yorta and Wurundjeri tribes with blood ties to the Ngarrindjeri, Wadi Wadi and Wiradjuri nations of Australia, and has South Sea Islander ancestry from Lacon Island and Ambae Island. Nathaniel possesses over 20 years’ experience as a freelance musician and music teacher and has had the opportunity to teach in many tertiary and vocational educational institutions across the country.
Nathaniel works as the First Nations Engagement Lead and Regional Arts Fund Lead at Flying Arts Alliance. In his role, he supports cross-disciplinary arts activities throughout Queensland through the Regional Arts Fund. His aim is to increase the economic, social, and cultural impact of artists in regional Queensland, with a particular focus on First Nation’s creatives.

Struggling to find the words to articulate your art practice? In this webinar, Hamish Sawyer, Brisbane-based curator, writer and Director of Outer Space, will discuss practical skills for communicating your creative concept to audiences of all types.
This free presentation is suitable for artists and arts workers looking to enhance their exhibition labels, artwork statements and artist biographies to compliment their physical artwork/s.
Hamish will share with you:
- Practical tips for clear and concise writing.
- Strategies for defining artistic concepts and identifying your creative influences.

About your facilitator: Hamish Sawyer is a Brisbane-based independent curator and writer with more than fifteen years experience in programming and management roles across the commercial, government and not-for-profit sectors. His practice is informed by close collaboration with artists. From 2016 to 2019, Sawyer was Curator and Manager of Caloundra Regional Gallery. Sawyer has previously worked at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, serving as a co-curator for the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT8) in 2015. He has also held positions at the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) and Arts Queensland, as well as working for several commercial galleries. Sawyer has written for publications including Art Monthly Australasia, Sunnie and VAULT. In addition, he has contributed to monographs on artists Michael Cook, Laith McGregor and Marian Tubbs. In 2018, Sawyer recorded a long-form interview with Sandra Selig for the James C. Sourris Australian Artist Interviews series, commissioned by the State Library of Queensland.

In this webinar, esteemed curator and writer Naomi Evans will explore what it means to curate an exhibition in a Queensland context. Focussing on small art galleries and local government spaces, Naomi will help participants understand the strengths of a diverse art collection or practice, learn approaches to planning and curating thematically, and break down strategies for community engagement.

About your facilitator: Naomi Evans is an Australian curator and writer whose practice critically engages with processes and cultural functions of art and exhibition-making as inextricable with political and social contexts. Appointed to Griffith University Art Museum in 2011, Evans has previously held curatorial positions at MCA Sydney and QAGOMA Brisbane. Recent solo projects include Elizabeth Newman: Is that a ‘No’? (2020) and Simryn Gill: Sweet Chariot (2016) and group exhibitions Source Materials (2021-22) (with Dr Carol McGregor), The Abyss: Strategies in Contemporary Art (2019), Dark Rooms: Women directing the lens 1978-1998 (2018). Evans served on Multimedia Arts Asia Pacific’s (MAAP) Board of Directors from 2013-16, and is Adjunct Fellow of Griffith University’s Creative Arts Research Institute.
